LA LECHE LEAGUE OF ELIZABETH CITY

Helping families to breastfeed, chestfeed, and pump through peer support, encouragement, information, and education.

HISTORY

La Leche League was started in 1956 by 7 moms who weren't getting the information and support they needed for breastfeeding.  They started meeting together and sharing what they knew and learning together.  Today, it's an international nonprofit organization, with thousands of members, but each group is still lead by local parents who have breastfed/chestfed and choose to help others do the same. Our Leaders are accredited volunteers and there is no cost for our services or any of our meetings.

HOW WE HELP

  • Provide free meetings led by volunteer Leaders who are experienced with breastfeeding and are accredited by La Leche League International

  • Offer support between meetings for breastfeeding challenges, such as positioning and latch, being sure your baby is getting enough milk, soreness, pumping and milk storage, and much more

  • Help parents learn about the ages and stages of breastfeeding.

  • Create a community of support by bringing breastfeeding families together

EVERYONE IS WELCOME

We welcome parents, pregnant people, and support people who are interested in providing human milk to their child, however that looks. We provide FREE information, support, encouragement, and community to anyone who wants to breastfeed, chestfeed, exclusively pump, or combination feed.

All questions, from pregnancy, through weaning, and beyond, are appreciated and (hopefully) answered! We'd love to have you join us

ABOUT LA LECHE LEAGUE

La Leche League (La Leche is Spanish for "the milk") was founded in 1956 in Franklin Park, Illinois. The founders of La Leche League were seven mothers who had breastfed their own children and were motivated to help others who, for a variety of different reasons (often related to social expectations and misinformation) had difficulties with and questions about breastfeeding.

La Leche League was founded to give information and encouragement, mainly through personal help, to all parents who want to breastfeed/chestfeed their babies. While complementing the care of the physician and other health care professionals, it recognizes the unique importance of one parent helping another to perceive the needs of their child and to learn the best means of fulfilling those needs.  Our leaders are accredited volunteers and there is no cost for their service or any of our meetings.

LLL believes that breastfeeding & chestfeeding, with its many important physical and psychological advantages, is best for baby and family and is the ideal way to initiate good parent-child relationships.

The ideals and principles of parenting which are the foundation of LLLI beliefs are further developed in THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING, the most comprehensive handbook on breastfeeding and parenting ever published. It has provided needed answers to three generations of nursing parents on every aspect of breastfeeding.

(From LLLI publication No. 300-17, "La Leche League Purpose and Philosophy.")
